Dr. Stefan Schmitgen
Director, McKinsey & Company, Beijing office |
Dr.
Stefan Schmitgen is a Director of McKinsey & Company's Beijing
office. Stefan has focused in the TIMe industries (Telecom, IT, Media)
and is leading McKinsey's Asia-Pacific Telecom and Media practice.
Joining McKinsey in 1990 he used to be with the German practice
(Duesseldorf 1990-1994, Frankfurt 1994-2005) before moving to Asia
in 2005. During his 19 year tenure he has served various clients:
mobile and fixed telecom operators in Western Europe, Eastern Europe
and Asia on topics ranging from strategy, organization to operational
improvement and marketing excellence programs. Beyond telecom operators
he worked for telecom handset manufacturers, software and IT service
companies.
During his tenure with McKinsey he took several leadership roles:
European Software and Service industry group (1996-2001), European
Mobile Telecoms industry group (2001-2005). Since 2006 he is leading
the Telecom and Media Practices of McKinsey in Asia-Pacific. The
Telecom and Media practice group comprises about 40 Partners and
Associate Partners across the 6 Asia-Pacific office complexes of
McKinsey.
Since moving to Asia, Stefan has lead McKinsey’s client services
for fixed and mobile telecom operators in China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia,
Philippines and Pakistan, as well as client services for a handset
manufacturer and a software company with focus on the Chinese businesses.
Stefan has lead several knowledge initiatives of McKinsey in the
telecom space such as “service provider of the future”, “telecom
transformation”, and more recently the initiative to analyze the
economic impact of wireless in emerging markets.
Beyond his core industry focus Stefan has several Firm leadership
roles being a member of global people review committees and the
Knowledge Services Committee of McKinsey overseeing the knowledge
and research infrastructure of the Firm.
Stefan is holding a diploma in industrial engineering and a PhD in
computer science. |

– a leading Asian technology publication – calls Michael Malaysia’s
Mr. Broadband for his efforts is pushing the boundaries of broadband
penetration and access in the country.
Today with Michael at the helm, P1 is at the global forefront of
commercial WiMAX deployment. P1 W1MAX is Malaysia’s leading WiMAX
telco and is currently the world’s largest deployment of 802.16e
2.3GHz WiMAX network, outside Korea. P1 is also the first Intel-invested
WiMAX telco in Southeast Asia. Recently, P1 entered into the portable
wireless broadband market with WiGGY – the region’s most advanced
USB modem, incorporating MIMO smart antenna technology capable of
download speeds of up to 10Mbps (currently the fastest USB modem
in Malaysia).
Michael’s leadership has transformed P1 from a relatively unknown
to a global leader in WiMAX technology in a little over eight months.
As it stands, P1 currently posses the largest subscriber base and
the largest WiMAX network in Malaysia.
Prior to joining the group, Michael was the CEO of TMNet, the region’s
largest Internet service provider. Michael’s tenure there transformed
TMNet into a billion-dollar enterprise with over 1 million subscribers
within 18 months.
Michael was also previously Senior Vice President of Branding and
Market Development for Celcom, and Marketing Director for Oracle
Malaysia. He is an Electrical Engineer by training with a Masters
in Business Administration. |

Matthias Kunze Managing

Matthias
Kunze is Managing Director for Yahoo! Connected Life in Asia. He is
responsible for extending Yahoo!’s mobile products, broadband services
and digital home experiences in the region. Matthias also oversees
the deployment and distribution of Yahoo!’s revolutionary mobile products
such as Yahoo! oneSearch, Yahoo! Go services, as well as leading the
mobile monetization strategy across the Asia Pacific region.
Matthias joined Yahoo! in 2007 as Director Mobile Monetisation
for Connected Life in Asia. He is also the Vice Chairman of the
APAC Chapter of the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA).
Prior to joining Yahoo!, Matthias has been working in the mobile
advertising industry for more than four years. He was the co-founder
of Actionality, Inc., a mobile advertising company, which was acquired
by Yahoo! in May 2007. He has also successfully co-founded three
software companies and worked in the publishing and television business
in Europe for many years.
Matthias received an M.B.A degree from The University of Cologne,
Germany. He currently lives in Singapore with his wife and two sons.
Matthias enjoys competitive sports and was formerly a member of the
national swimming team in Germany and had participated in the Ironman
triathlons. |

Zamzamzairani Mohd. Isa, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication
Engineering from Plymouth Polytechnic, United Kingdom and has attended

Strategies for Creating Shareholder Value’.
He was appointed CEO of Malaysia Business overseeing TM Retail,
TM Wholesale, TM Net Sdn Bhd and several other related subsidiaries.
Prior to the appointment, he was the Senior Vice President, Group
Strategy and Technology of TM. He has over 22 years of telecommunications
industry experience. In addition to his executive responsibilities,
Zamzamzairani also sits on the Board of several TM Group subsidiaries,
including VADS Berhad. |

Mr. Walid Irshaid is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited since 2007.
He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Electronics Engineering from NED University in Pakistan and has been active in the telecom sector in the Middle East & North Africa for more than 28 years.
Mr. Irshaid has previously worked with reputable operators including Etisalat, Investcom in Lebanon, Paltel in Palestine, and FLAG Telecom as President -Middle East & Africa. Under his leadership, FLAG became recognized in the region as the premium provider of international connectivity services to telecom operators and service providers.

During Jamaludin’s decade of leadership with Maxis, the company’s revenue grew more than twenty-fold to about USD2.3 billion and net profit grew to about USD600 million. With nearly 30 years in the ICT industry Jamaludin was named Asian Mobile Operator CEO of the Year by Asian Mobile News Awards 2007. He is currently a board member of the GSMA. |

in Singapore, Boudewijn has responsibilities for Acision overall
business strategy and operations in the region. Boudewijn joined
CMG in 1998 as the Chief Representative, when he was tasked with
extending CMG’s global presence to China.
Boudewijn successfully brought the China operations up to speed by
implementing localised marketing programmes, establishing key alliances
and clinching a significant number of client deals. In early 2007,
the business led by Boudewijn was bought by a consortium of private

interactive content pioneer. He created a number of groundbreaking
interactive products and companies, launched and built localized versions

in venture funding.
Some of Paul’s roles have included:
- COO of FantasticOne, building the first pan-Asian broadband
entertainment company;
- Founder and GM of MTVAsia.com, leading the establishment of
MTV’s Internet presence in 6 Asian countries;

Rajiv Mehrotra is a veteran of the telecom industry and the pioneer
of satellite cable TV in India. He is the founder and chairman of
the Shyam Group of companies, with revenues of $60+ million. Shyam
Telecom, the flagship of the Shyam Group, has a footprint in all
areas of telecom. Shyam Telelink was one of the first operators
in the world to deploy CDMA technology for fixed wireless services,
and Hexacom (now Airtel Cellular) was the first GSM operator in
Rajasthan.
Rajiv founded VNL in 2005 as a means of providing affordable telephony
to rural areas where ARPUs are less than $2 a month. |

Chief Operating Officer of the MEF, Kevin Vachon is in-charge with

Vachon held the position of CEO of DIATEM Networks Inc., a Carrier

Mark Dankberg

Mark
Dankberg is a co-founder of ViaSat, Inc and has served as CEO
and Chairman of the company since its inception in 1986. He
began his career with the Collins Radio Division of Rockwell
International, and at Linkabit Corp in San Diego, where he held
positions in engineering, technical management and business
segment management.
Under his leadership ViaSat has consistently been one of
America’s fastest growing technology companies. Mark has been
recognized as an Entrepreneur of the Year in San Diego in
2000, as the Satellite Industry Executive of the Year in 2003,
and received the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
(AIAA) Aerospace International Communications Award in 2008.
He is an acknowledged industry expert in aerospace, defense
and satellite communications and has co-developed several
military standards on satellite networking. He has participated
on Department of Defense advisory panels and was invited to
testify before a Congressional committee on high technology
growth companies and IPO’s.

Amiram served in a research and development unit of the Israeli
Defense Force (1977-1987) and was awarded the Israel Defense
Award in 1988. Amiram holds an MSc in Digital Communications

as CEO since July 2004. Under his tenure, SpeedCast has become
a leading satellite service provider in Asia. ,
He was previously working with Rhodia (ex Rhone-Poulenc),
where he held successive Sales & Marketing positions spearheading
global strategy initiatives.
He also has experience in consumer marketing, from working
at Black & Decker. Pierre-Jean Beylier holds a MBA of the

David is responsible for the management of Intelsat’s sales

Prior to his current position, he held a variety of management
positions with PanAmSat from 1995-2003.
He also served as a commissioned officer in the Royal Australian

decade, serving as Senior Vice President of Sales at GlobeCast

as a government official for more than ten years and worked
for Intelsat during 1986-1987.

Tristan is a highly experienced corporate and commercial
lawyer with extensive international experience in telecommunications
law and regulation.
After graduating BA (Japanese) and LLB(Hons) from Auckland
University, Tristan commenced his career as the Wellington
High Court Judges' Clerk, before going on to practice law
with several leading international law firms. He then joined
Vodafone Group PLC, where he occupied a number of senior leadership
positions, including Legal and Regulatory Director - Asia-Pacific
Region and Governance Director - Europe Region.
Outside work, Tristan enjoys spending time with his family and
friends, keeping fit at the gym, keeping up his Japanese language

Prior to joining IDA, RADM(NS) Tay served 25 years in the

command and staff positions in the Republic of Singapore Navy.
He served as the Chief of Navy from 1 April 2003 to 31 August
2007. As Chief of Navy, RADM(NS) Tay led the transformation
of the Republic of Singapore Navy into a naval force characterised
by cutting-edge technologies and new fighting doctrines, and
capable of a broader spectrum of operation.
RADM(NS) Tay was awarded the Singapore Armed Forces Overseas
Scholarship in 1982 to pursue undergraduate studies at Oxford

From 1999 to 2005, he was the Group Public Policy Director
of Vodafone Group. Originally from Australia, he moved to

of SES-Astra. He has worked for Etisalat on a number
of issues including the successful bid for the third mobile
licence in Egypt.
In the satellite sector, he has also represented CNN, PanAmSat

advised a number of governments on sector reform (including
international regulatory aspects with regard to the privatisation
of Singapore Telecom), drafting legislation and licences for
newly created regulatory offices, particularly in the Middle
East.

Mr. Ricky Wong Wai-kay is the co-founder and chairman of

Mr. Wong joined IBM upon completion of the undergraduate

services.

198 countries.
Previously Alan was on the senior management team of a UK

Tammisto has taken his entrepreneurial spirit and knowledge
around the world and spoken at numerous conferences about
m-Commerce, e-Commerce, e-Business standards and mobile initiatives
throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. He was also
invited by the European Commission to sit on an eBusiness
standards Round Table by Commissioner, Erkki Liikanen. Tammisto
recently accepted the honor of receiving an Internationalisation
Award by Tarja Halonen, The President of the Republic of Finland,
for his efforts and accomplishments in building some of the
most successful international operations from Finland. Tammisto
was also voted by the readers of Finnish business media (Taloussanomat)
as one of the three most influential business entrepreneurs
in Finland in 2007.
